The translucent liner on the adhesive side is removed and the tape is folded over and adhered. This slightly lifts the molding, and provides a reliable mask that prevents overspray.
As technicians spray over the masking, the paint flows into the small gap between the molding and the paint surface and covers beneath the molding itself. When the masking tape is removed, the molding simply drops on top of the fresh paint — no visible paint edges, and no need to spend extra time removing paint lines from trim after painting.
